Our team has had a busy few weeks working on the reboot of the Pathway program, with plans for the current and future iterations of the program to be delivered virtually.
Pathway is an intensive program that prepares experienced Specsavers optometrists, optical dispensers and retail managers for practice ownership. The structured program adds critical business management and development skills to the candidates’ existing clinical, dispensing, or retail skills, setting up the future store owners for success.
Using virtual classrooms and online resources, the changes to the program ensure Pathway can continue in 2020 and into 2021, despite current face-to-face training restrictions.
Kimberley Hannan, Pathway Program Director said in addition to moving the program online the team has made other changes to ensure the program delivers strong outcomes to trainee partners.
“Due to ongoing restrictions on travel and training, we’ve removed the project component of the program and introduced a ‘Learner journal’, which provides participants with the key criteria they need to understand and demonstrate at the end of their pathway journey,” she says. “It also provides an opportunity for reflection, in addition to the activities within the program.”
There are also new business planning and assessment processes to ensure the outcomes of the program are aligned to the real-life experiences of being a partner.
The team has also adjusted Pathway to focus on localised learning and support.
Kim says the Pathway program relies not just on self-learning but also learning from the experiences of the wider Pathway group.
“In 2021, we’ll be grouping the participants by state so they still have the opportunity to network and learn from each other, and we’ve also introduced Pathway mentors, made up of our Partners who have completed Pathway program to provide an extra level of support.”
