This month, the team at Specsavers Ingleburn is aiming to restore sight to hundreds who otherwise would have no access to eyecare by simply dusting off their running shoes.
Fred’s Big Run is an event organised by Specsavers’ national charity partner The Fred Hollows Foundation, where participants are challenged to run or walk at least 25km each over the month of August.
Store partner Liina Hurrell says the team has over 100 years of optical experience so everyone understands the value of sight.
“We receive great job satisfaction every day by making a difference in people’s lives. But still so many go blind unnecessarily. The more people we can help give the miracle of sight to through The Fred Hollows Foundation, the better, so we’re asking people to get on board and support the cause.”
Liina says taking part in the event is also proving to be a great team-build, even if the running is happening in the local neighbourhoods of each team member.
“COVID-19 meant that we had to think creatively about our normal team building events. Participating in Fred’s Big Run is a way to work together as a team but also maintain social distancing and infection-control procedures.
“We’re having a great time encouraging each other and fundraising together. It’s nice to know that we’re making a real impact in a time of great need – and we’re getting fit and healthy while doing it!” says Liina.
The Fred Hollows Foundation’s Founding Director, Gabi Hollows says it is inspiring to see teams like Specsavers Ingleburn coming together for a common cause, doing this event because they believe in Fred’s vision to restore sight.
“We often say that $25 can restore sight to one person. Well, now we’re challenging people to run, jog or walk at least 25km for Fred. Seeing this team get involved warms my heart.”
Fred’s Big Run is free to enter and people can participate as individuals or in teams. It isn’t too late to register – http://fredsbigrun.org/
