SCC Online kicks off with strong turnout

The first event in our SCC Online Series kicked off last night with a fantastic turn out of 594 optometry professionals, including representatives from optometry, ophthalmology, patient care groups, and professional bodies.

The event, the first in a three-month-long series of online CPD sessions, featured presentations from Specsavers Director of Optometry, Dr Ben Ashby and ophthalmologist, Dr Aanchal Gupta.

In his opening address, Dr Ashby revealed the impact of Specsavers Transforming Eye Heath Strategy in the past 12 months, which saw an additional 9,507 glaucoma patients and 3,816 diabetes patients referred for specialist care in 2019-20, compared with the previous year. Follow up with ophthalmologists saw 80% concordance on the glaucoma referrals.

Dr Ashby also spoke about the revised Transforming Eye Health Strategy in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Specsavers data revealed that patient numbers dropped significantly due to COVID-19 – as many as 500,000 patients missed eye test appointments, including 30,000 who would have required referrals to ophthalmology.

Dr Ashby said Specsavers’ revised strategy uses key enablers including technology, collaboration, and data to prioritise this patient backlog and ensure that we are identifying and referring all the patients missed during COVID for sight-saving treatment.

Following his presentation, Dr Gupta went on to present her insightful lecture on optimising outcomes for patients following cataract surgery, where she focused on the common corneal conditions in patients facing cataract surgery and how to gain the best refractive outcomes for patients who have cataract and corneal disease.

Both sessions will be available as on-demand recordings as part of the SCC Online Series and will be uploaded to the Specsavers MyCPD portal in the coming days.

The next live webinar event in the SCC Online Series will be on August 5, feature Dr Matthew Russell discussing clinical decision making in Vitreoretinal Disorders.
