The number of cataract surgeries performed in Australia has increased 2.5-fold since 2008, with a further 2, 400 surgeries required each year to meet demand. Advancements in technology and methodology has ensured the procedure is safe and effective, although patient outcomes are dependent on many factors. While there is an association between incidence of complications and surgeon caseload with surgeons who perform the most surgeries per year reporting the lowest rate of complications, some factors remain beyond the surgeon’s control.
