Registration has opened for the third Specsavers Dispensing Conference (SDC3), and optical dispensers can now sign up to hear from Professor Mo Jalie, author of the core dispensing text, Principles of Ophthalmic Lenses.
SDC3 will take place from 4 to 9 August 2019 as a one-day event held in Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney. Open to all qualified optical dispensers – both Specsavers and non-Specsavers – and optical dispensing students, the conference will feature practical and theoretical workshops presented by experts in the field.
Prof Jalie will be travelling from the UK to headline this year’s event with a presentation on aspheric lenses. He will discuss the various types of aspherical surfaces and how the surface astigmatism arises. He will also explain how to calculate the required asphericity and how this feature can be used to produce flatter, thinner lenses, as well as how the geometry of atoroidal surfaces can be used in the design of bi-aspheric lenses for astigmatic prescriptions.
Prof Jalie is the Visiting Professor in Optometry to the optometry course at Ulster University in the UK and to the educational facility, Essilor Academy Europe. He also works as a consultant to the ophthalmic industry. He is recognised as an international authority on the design of spectacle lenses and has written several books, including Principles of Ophthalmic Lenses – which is acknowledged as a standard text on the subject – and his most recent book, Ophthalmic Lenses & Dispensing.
Prof Jalie has authored some 200 papers on ophthalmic lenses, contact lenses, intraocular lenses and dispensing, and holds patents for aspheric spectacle lenses and intraocular lenses. He has also produced several educational CDs and runs a web-based course in Spectacle Lens Design leading to the qualification FBDO(Hons) SLD.
More information on SDC3 and the speakers who will be presenting will be announced in the coming weeks.
