A virtual education evening centered around optometrists’ increasing importance in the patient journey to cataract surgery and IOL options. We will outline the latest technology in presbyopia correcting IOLs as well as pre- and post-operative considerations including patient counselling, referral to surgeon, post-operative refraction and prescribing tips. A suite of practice tools and patient education resources will be explained.

2. At completion of this CPD activity, participants should be able to understand the features, advantages and benefits of different IOL types used in cataract surgery.

3. At completion of this CPD activity, participants should understand the importance of managing and treating the ocular surface eye prior to consultation with a surgeon for cataract surgery and post-operatively.

4. At the completion of this CPD activity participants should be able to identify and discuss which IOL option may suit patient’s individual needs and prepare them for surgical consultation.

Speaker Bios

Simon Allen B.Optom (Hons.): Simon is an optometrist and IOL product manager with Alcon Surgical. Prior to joining Alcon in 2017 he worked across independent and corporate practices for 15 years both in Australia and the UK. Upon joining Alcon, Simon worked in Professional Affairs and Key Account Management as part of the Vision Care team before moving to Alcon Surgical in 2020.

Monica Lette M.Optom, B.Optom (Hons.): Monica is the Practice Development Manager NSW/ACT for Alcon Laboratories. She has consulted in both corporate and private ophthalmology in both management and clinical roles, with a focus on pre- and post-operative cataract and refractive patient care. She was the Referrer Liaison NSW for a corporate ophthalmology group for six years. She has also consulted in private and corporate optometry practices in metropolitan Sydney and regional areas. She is currently a director on the board for Optometry NSW/ACT.
